The Ugly Ducklings

These ugly black/brown water stained chairs took many weeks of hard work and TLC.

After peeling off old filling, upholstery and hay.

It was time to peel off the ugly layers of brown and black paint, which took ages.

I then spent several days painting them and varnishing to protect the paintwork.

The original upholstery was done in 3 parts, and we have done a chair like that in the past but this time we made the filling one piece as we had scored the perfect embroideries to cover the entire back with one piece.

Still rough at the edges but getting there!

All fabric needs to be cut close by the staples with much care.

And then the staples are covered with a pretty band.

After all the hard work we loooooooove the results these chairs really turned in to pretty peacocks :)

They make me smile every time I look at them :)

As the embroideries are vintage and handmade they have variations.

You can buy one, but I hope someone will keep them together.

Tender Loving Care

I scored this cute but sad little side table with hand carvings a few weeks ago.

It clearly used to be beautiful, all made of heavy solid wood with inlays on the top and hand carvings but it was not protected against the sun and other outdoors elements.

We removed the top, cleaned off the leftover varnish and reinforced the skeleton.

I then painted it with 5 colors of paint, layer for layer from dark to light to let the carvings pop.

Elastic webbing on the top instead of heavy wood.

Foam and betting.

And beautiful vintage Kilim pieces, as you can see I used the paint colors to match the kilim.

Nothing is straight or perfect as all materials are handmade and vintage, but we are embracing the imperfections :)

Hidden Beauty

It has been a while since we made our last big furniture piece.

This one was actually even worse with a horrible purple upholstery but I forgot to take a picture of it, I guess I wanted to get rid of that monstrous fabric asap.

After sanding, filling and painting its feet and making a new filling with fresh foam it already started to look better.

As we used a gorgeous vintage fabric we needed to be very careful before starting cutting the fabric, no room for error when your material is precious vintage handwoven fabric with hand embroidered flowers!

I got all giddy while making this, you can not not smile when you look at this chair :)

After all staple work was done it was time for the small finishing touches like blind stitching by hand for a smooth finishing. I prefer to do those outside for better light but miraculously we have been having rain these past few days (yaaay) so I did them in a funny way. Advantage when you work from home no need to get out of your comfy PJ's :)

Just some pretty trim for the front feet to cover the staples.

And she is ready!

My entire body aches, upholstery is hard work!

I love all the embroidered details!

All we Need is Love

All we need is love, even a heart shaped pouf :)
This one was never really anything special but a kid clearly didn't improve it by the time we scored it.

All the faux leather, out of shape foam and filling had to be removed.

Then it was time to choose the fabric, always fun to do.

An her she is with a pretty new dress and a whole new attitude :)

The top is a beautiful vintage embroidery, the sides a terracotta colored velvet.

Available at StarHomeStudio among other one of a kind furniture pieces.

New Year, New Ideas

In case you have noticed, our Etsy shops have been closed for a while, we'll be back soon but need to put some things in order first to get back to normal.

In the mean time we are re-organizing our workspaces, and our home and also finishing projects that have been waiting for a while.

These chairs have been ongoing since Summer 2016!

For some reason they waited a long time to get all the attention they needed. We did peel off the old upholstery, repaired the skeleton and sanded the woodwork back in 2016 but after that we were not sure what to do with them.

Finally at the end of last year we had enough and I painted them white to have a plainer base. We then played around with embroideries and fabrics until we were satisfied. I then painted some little flowers to match the embroideries, varnished the paint work and they were finally ready to be reupholstered.

These chairs are very different than the usual chairs we have done and were challenging but finally after 1.5 years they are ready :)

The beautiful trim was a trim we bought last year in California and it matches perfectly.

They took a while but we are happy how they (finally) turned out :)
They'll be available at StarHomeStudio as soon as we reopen (which will be soon!).
