Coastal Christmas

Just listed a new seashell wreath perfect for both a coastal theme and Christmas. Christmas is quickly coming closer and as we will be away in December (last shipping date December 3) it is really time to think of Christmas gifts if you want it from our shops :)

Our sea urchin trees are back in the shop as well :)

And lots of ornaments!

Happy Holidays!

It's almost Christmas so I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! We have closed the shops for the Holidays, Star mom is house sitting in Rome! And I will be home taking it easy but also doing some much needed garden work and home organizing while I don't have to worry about orders.
Mum will be blogging from Rome, I'm curious what she will do there :)
Happy Holidays, everyone!

Get The Look Vol.8

With less than 40 days left to Christmas I think it is alright to show some Christmas items here! I love wreaths, but I like them when they are made with things that won't die. Our pretty wreath was handmade in 1875! And still pretty!

I love love love Christmas trees, but do not like the idea of killing one for a few weeks pleasure so always look for alternatives instead. The one above is perfect for those with little space, made out of branches, totally adorable!
Ours is made with driftwood and is a great size for a smaller home.

Love the old times look of this kitchen, hanging copper pans and stuff gives such a festive vibe in the kitchen. Below you can find some stuff to start your hanging stuff collection :)

I have a soft spot for pretty organized workspaces, maybe because ours never stays organized for very long. This one also has a cool sewing chest, we have one even cooler available, a very pretty mid-century organizer chest with 6 cubbies.

Snail Mail

It is not often that I complain, almost never publicly. You won't see me ramble on FaceBook or here on the blog. Today I won't complain either but I do want to lay my egg and share something with you.

As an online seller you have to deal with lots of things. You have to make pretty items, than you have to take good pictures to show those items accurately and in detail and be the eyes for the customer.
You have to explain each and every aspect of the item and also of your services like packaging, shipping, policies etc etc.

I enjoy these things, yes it is hard sometimes to do all these things, you have to do many kinds of jobs while your customers hardly know or acknowledge how much work you put in to it all. With handmade each and every item has your time and love in it and you take everything very personally.

The reason why I am saying all this? I love my work, mum and I feel blessed to do the work we love and we are grateful for each and every sale we make. After 10 years each sale is still a thrill, but there is always a but :)

Christmas is our busiest time, like most online sellers December is the month to make your year and have some extra cash. We had a busy Christmas, we offer registered shipping and express shipping, time frames are explained in each listing and lots of people choose express shipping. However even more did not. And here the problems started. Emails and Etsy convo's start to pour in the closer we got to Christmas. During Christmas everything got quiet but after Christmas things got worse.
You have to understand that on a good normal Sunny day shipping takes 15 days to the US, we live 500 miles from Istanbul so by the time our package goes from our postoffice to the main office of Istanbul about 3-4 days have already passed. After that it leaves Turkey and arrives in NY where millions of packages arrive and are sorted, some are checked at customs, this of course all takes time, but when all goes well it is 15 days.

During Christmas the millions of packages get many millions more and this is where USPS always gets stuck, even with extra workers they just can not manage, and this year was worse than ever.
Right now we still have 42 packages undelivered, all from December. We have emails, convo's, Etsy cases, Paypal cases, the whole stressful package, and we are of course feeling pretty down about it. With 1-2 packages worse case you can refund the buyer, but with this many that is impossible.
The worst part has been a few people who are practically yelling at you and treat you like sh*t, and are blaming you for slow shipping.
I try to explain; Christmas, bad weather, we are at the other side of the globe, simply the fact that it is out of our hands and that we offer express shipping to avoid such things. Also pointing out that we ship the packages within 2 business days of purchase. One buyer has sent 11 horrible emails, opened cases and still keeps saying that we provide horrible service every possible way, like we are the owners of USPS and enjoy keeping mail away from our customers.

So yes this is the part that sucks of our work; delays in shipment and the pissed off customers that come with those delays. Luckily most are understanding and patient, but a few do manage to make you feel horrible. I just wish we could beam things right over like in StarTrek, that would make the world a smaller and maybe better place? :)

If you are one of the waiting customers, thank you for your patience and understanding :)
If you are a seller living the same nightmare I would love to hear your stories :). If you are a seller who found the formula to keep all customers happy please share it :)

Holiday Vibes

We had some crazy weeks and are now calming down. Just today we finished these 3 custom order bags below of which I showed a peek last time. And Christmas calmness has now officially begun :)

Since we have our pack of dogs we gave up on the Christmas tree, all our decorations have been at the attic for years, I kind of miss it, but on the other hand we don't have much time for it and the dogs would make a mess, and we love the dogs much more than a fake festive tree ;)

It kind of feel like a Spring post, but I like it :)

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope that you get wonderful gifts, and most importantly will be surrounded with your loved ones!

Our Creative Space...

Now that Christmas shopping season is approaching (not so much yet as the elections are of course a scarier issue) we are making ornaments. We like to make a few new types every season, they are always in small editions which makes it fun to make and more special for those who buy them :)

This year we actually made them even more special by making our own handmade tassels! They are so much richer and fuller than the ready bought ones, making them look just way prettier :)

This is done with a fringe maker. After Mum winds the yarn, thread etc around it, I sew it several times with the sewing machine making a fringe. Then I round it up to make it a tassel with some hand sewing and a bead cap or beads for a pretty finishing touch.

We are now working on some iridescent and shiny tassels for some extra festive ornaments :)
These and more are available at Star Home Studio.

Merry Christmas!

We here by would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas!

For us the past 7 years Christmas is the time we work harder than ever, which we are thankful for of course but doesn't leave much time to celebrate :)
We never have snow around here, its too warm for that, but we will now rest a bit and enjoy our merry and bright bathroom!

I painted the ceiling 3 times, only need to give the grouts some tender loving care and then clean it up all nicely but we are very happy with the result, considering how it used to look this is a huge improvement :)

Green Christmas

Christmas shopping time has begone! While it still seems far away, time flies and when you want something from overseas (like for example from one of ours shops *wink wink) it is better to start early to avoid late arrival stress.
To start the season I made this driftwood Christmas tree, all wood is found on the beach and the foot and steel stick going through the driftwood pieces are vintage so everything is eco friendly :) Available at StarHomeStudio.

And here are some great earth and financial friendly other ideas for Christmas:

Environment friendly packaging ideas with the sources from here and here

Toilet paper Christmas Calendar, you can find the tutorial here

And finally instead of watering trees for ages just to cut them down for a few weeks to enjoy I love alternatives, and if you have a small space this one is really great:

The Season of Kindness

I am sure that all our readers remember our Etsy friend Sandra, who lost her husband almost a year ago.

Sandra has a hellish year behind her. Besides her grief she has encountered lots of ill will from the people that were supposed to stand by her.

Sandra and her little boy lived in an old farm house and used an other space as a workshop that both belonged to her husband and his siblings. It was accorded that she could stay there and pay the taxes and the upkeep.

A few weeks after her husband's death, they told her to vacate the workshop. She didn't protest and converted  the stable of the farm in a new workshop. She did most of the work herself, but still, she had to make expenses to do it that she could hardly afford.

And, of course, when that was done, they wanted her out of the house. They started a pestering campaign , cutting her phone, her electricity, when she had work in the kiln, etc.
She has resisted as much as she could, but the stress was too great and finally she caved in and has moved to a rented apartment.

Sandra is a very brave young woman, and in the middle of all those unsavory maneuvers, she never stopped working, making products to sell locally and on Etsy.

Despite her best efforts, she is really struggling financially.

Kindness should not be limited to this season. But it is the season of celebration, family warmth and joy, and the season to remember those who lack all that.

Sandra has a bunch of great new items in her shop. She has the most lovely Christmas ornaments for a price that most people can easily afford. And we all need Christmas ornaments, don't we? And presents for a bunch of relatives, right?

If every one that reads this would buy at least a small item from her shop, Sandra and her little boy would have a Christmas, maybe not happier, but at least a bit more carefree.

To thank you for your kindness, we will send one of our Christmas trees (in the color of the winner's choice) to one or more of the people who buys from her. We will lot a Christmas tree  for every fifty entries.
Leave the transaction nr. in your comment here (or contact us through Etsy if you like to keep it private) to enter the raffle to win a Sea Urchin Tree.

Please, spread the word among your friends and let's share the kindness.  It is the Season of Kindness.

P.S. We had written and planned this post for the weekend, but are posting it earlier because Sandra is in hospital since last Wednesday.
She has pleurisy, and they have put a chest tube in her back to expel air from the pleural space.
She will be home probably on Monday, but as you can imagine, the situation is even more dire now.
Please help if you can.

Our Creative Space...

We have a new toy, it is something that mum has been wanting for a long time and finally we could afford it. It is the Eclips electronic cutting machine, which cuts leather, vinyl, cardboard etc by simply putting it in to the machine and choosing the shape you want.

We have lots of lovely colors of fake leather and I have been cutting them up and want to rivet those shapes together to make a bag, I think it will look super fun :)

You have to put the material you want to cut on a sticky material, thin paper didn't work out well as it got stuck, but thicker material worked fine. One down point is that the stickyness goes away almost right away so if you are thinking of buying one, also stock up some spray glue to spray it as without it the material get stuck and it becomes a cutted mess.

We are also planning to use these kind of things for packaging, for a fun and festive finishing touch.
