Miami, Miami Beach and Daytona Beach

Our first few days have passed in a haze. The journey was long; 1.5 hour drive to the airport a few hours at the airport then a 1.5 hour flight to Istanbul, waiting 5 hours in Istanbul and then a 13 hours flight to Miami. Jetlagged we went through the next day and drove to Miami beach and looked around but just by driving as parking is difficult and we were dazy. It is also a place for the rich and fortunate, lots of glamorous cars and fancy dressed people.

A golf court, how very Floridy :)

A peek in the Art Deco district.

Christmas-y Palmtrees.

Today we drove from Miami to Daytona Beach, a drive of more than 5 hours but we'll stay here two nights to chill a bit without city crowds.

We saw some adorable houses on our arrival.

And the Atlantic Ocean is much calmer and warmer than the Pacific Ocean which we saw last year at the California coast.

The weather has been warm and lovely, near the ocean and right before sunset it was chilly but it is December after all.

Someone else wrote this but I loved the message :)

The sand was so very fine it made that kind of movement like fresh snow when you walk on it.

We are staying right at the Penninsula, our room has no view of the ocean but it is just a 2-minute walk, so wonderful!

We haven't planned our next stop yet but you'll see soon enough :)

We're Hitting the Road!

We are off to quite the adventure! We'll be flying to Miami tomorrow morning and then renting a car and slowly going to New Orleans. Our route from Miami will be - West Palm Beach - Daytona Beach - Jacksonville - Tallahassee - Pensacola - Mobile and Finally New Orleans. We'll be staying 2 weeks in New Orleans and will have Christmas in this magical city while house/ pet sitting (2 goats, 2 cats, and a dog!) and then will slowly go back to Miami through a different route. We'll be away for a total of 5 weeks! In the process, we'll be going through 4 states: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana! We are super excited and of course, will be going to lots of iconic places but also not known places and tons of thrift shops :D
Most of our shops will be closed till January 9, but StarsWear, StarBags and partially StarHomeStudio will stay open but everything will be shipped on January 10.

And I will blog along the way so stay tuned :)

In the Mountains

The other day I went with some friends to another friend who recently moved to another town, a 1 hour drive from ours.

We brought some flowers for their new home and after a lovely brunch we went in to the mountains.

Because this town has no seashore and a much higher altitude the weather is cooler. But when we went in to the mountains we almost froze as it was very cold and we were totally not prepared for it!

We all did manage to take some photos between freezing, luckily our friends car had heated seats as we almost froze off our bums :D

Near the lake was chilling cold, and it has a very weird texture around it.

It seems that when the water became less it left an interesting texture behind.

We got higher and higher and it got colder and colder, and it turned out that we were not cold for nothing as we actually found ice! While our town was still 24 C (75F).

The landscape was rougher and interesting trees started to pop up the higher we went.

While it all looks lovely from the screen we were happy to go back to warmer places, next time we'll take our Winter gear with us :D

Our Home Town, Marmaris

Our town was originally a village with its main income sources being fish and honey.

These days it is almost entirely built for tourism although honey and fish are still income for some.

Most of the city is newly built except for the restored castle and surrounding old town, which looks like a Greek town (of course due to Turkish long history with Greece).

The castle was reconstructed by Süleyman the Magnificent during his expedition against Rhodes.

The Marmaris Castle is one of the few castles in Turkey that also possesses a museum.

According to Greek historian Herodotus, the first city walls in Marmaris were constructed in 3,000 BC, although the only written source about the construction of the castle by the renowned Ottoman traveler, Evliya ?elebi, in his work Seyahatname.

?elebi, who visited Mu?la and its vicinity in the 17th century, says Sultan Süleyman ordered the construction of the castle before his expedition to Rhodes and that the castle served as a military base during the expedition.

An important part of the castle was destroyed during World War I by a French warship. Until 1979, locals of Marmaris inhabited the castle, which is known to include 18 residences, a fountain and a cistern.

The castle was registered as a monumental structure in 1983 and opened as a museum in 1991. (source: wikipedia)

The castle has quite the view!

It also has a museum with found coins, earth wares and artifacts found in this area.

Just like the whole town, even the museum has cats :)

And built around the castle is the old town, lots of the houses are used as restaurants but plenty are still used as homes.

I love its charm.

The little details here and there are lovely, some are a bit hidden.

Evil eyes are of course here and there..

And you get a peek of the castle from time to time.

I love places where the old charm is not ruined.

These statues were made a while back, and there are a whole bunch more at the marine and in town. I'm not a huge fan but most people seem to like them and they do give some extra playfulness.

Waterpipe hoses, not healthy but so colorful :)
If you ever book a vacation to our town come and visit us :)!
